We've done some drone-based testing over the past two weekends. The devices involved included:
Altware Mesh Node node (prototype), amped with an AirBuddy and drone-mounted
Heltec Vision e250 - mesh node, amped
Omni LoRa antenna
The target distance was targeting 30+ miles for receiving encrypted location pings via a hovering drone, and that was achieved.
See more documentation about this test and results.

Test Methodology
Drone node was placed in experimental/unreleased tracking mode.
At 3 separate locations, varying distances from the base station, drone hovered at 120 meters altitude for 10 minutes
Upon returning to the base station, logs were retrieved to see whether pings with location were received from the drone
Results
Pings were successfully received at all 3 locations, including 22, 29, and 32 mile distances.
